Capturing
the inside story
Shooting a beautifully designed interior is a bit like
putting together a puzzle. The first task is finding an angle that captures
the spirit of the place, often
highlighting a particular aspect while including others for context. Then,
there is inevitably some rearranging to style for the camera as opposed to a
living space. Finally, there is the meticulous process of lighting the scene.
It’s usually a complex lighting setup with lights of different types and
intensities in different rooms. My goal is usually to light it in such
a way that it balances with whatever ambient light is there and in the end
looks natural, as if it hadn’t been artificially lighted at all.
It’s a challenge I enjoy; one of those left brain/right brain balancing activities.
It’s a joy to work in spaces created by talented designers,
where every item is there because it works with every other item
and the entirety of it gracefully communicates its own personality.
As you can see, I have had the good fortune to work in some truly fabulous homes.
